Guides For Writing The Short Story

A story is the most effective communicative instrument. Knowing how to tell a story is the greatest tool in oratorical presentation. No story lasts longer than a short story. A story is always a sure path to the heart. To tell a story that will preserve your message in the best parts of the hearts of your audience, you need to know the following:

Make sure you know the story. Telling a story you do not know will do no one any good. It is a blight on the honour of attention conferred on you by your audience.

Make sure the story has affected you in way. You cannot move the emotions of others without being moved yourself. The objects of the story, if connected to your experiences, will assist your presentation and make it very natural and engaging.

Decide upon the purpose of the story; that is, the central impression that you wish to make upon the reader. Never tell a story that won't bring some glory to a good idea.

Make the incidents of the plot contribute to this central impression, whatever it may be. Character portrayal; man in relation to his background - time, locality, or occupation; man in struggle against himself, another man, a beast, or nature; the portrayal of some human trait like courage, love, hate, loyalty, jealousy.

Have a definite beginning that tells the chief characters(who), the place(where), the time(when), and at least a suggestion of the central theme(what). You may not be over definite about, you can creatively alter the sequence.

Most stories are built around conflict brought about by a situation in which the chief character finds himself. The story must be told in such a way that the emotional effect upon the reader increases as the story reaches its climax. In other words, the story must move logically and swiftly to its high point. A good story makes the reader feels that it could not turn out otherwise than it did.

Avoid details that get in the way of the action of the story.

Make your characters seem like real people. Give them life and breath. Avoid telling too much about a character. Remember that he can make himself known to his readers by what he says, or avoids saying; by what he does, or fails to do; and by what other characters say about him.

Use conversion wherever possible to enliven the story. Once you have reached the climax of a story, move swiftly to the conclusion. Some stories have a natural climax, some, a surprise ending.

Make the ending to reinforce the central message and theme of the story. You have successfully created an emotion, give it some logical direction. Do not waste the moment.

I end this with a short poem. Enjoy it.

Tell the story

In a hurry

Never worry

To make it flowery

In a story man becomes a creator

Of joy, sadness, grief, and hope

He feeds the hearts of others like a mentor

To the bored a story is a doctor
